What goes into BMR

Roughly 60% of resting energy goes to organs, with the brain, liver, heart and kidneys unusually demanding per gram. Muscle is comparatively cheap at rest — about 13 kcal per kg per day — which is why 'muscle burns a lot of calories' is overstated, though it still helps.

Why BMR falls with dieting

A smaller body has a lower BMR, and the metabolism also adapts downward during prolonged restriction — the 'adaptive thermogenesis' effect. Both are reasons weight loss slows over time and why periodic maintenance breaks help.

From BMR to a real target

Multiply BMR by an activity factor of 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active) to get TDEE, then adjust for your goal. That two-step is the whole basis of evidence-based calorie planning.

What is the difference between BMR and RMR?
They are nearly the same. BMR requires strict lab conditions; RMR (resting metabolic rate) is measured more practically and typically reads a few percent higher. Most calculators, including this one, use BMR as the label.
Can I increase my BMR?
Building muscle raises it modestly, because muscle burns more at rest than fat. The bigger lever is total activity. Very low-calorie diets can lower BMR, which is one reason they backfire.
Which BMR formula is most accurate?
Mifflin-St Jeor is generally the most accurate for the general population. Katch-McArdle is better if you know your body fat percentage, because it keys off lean mass. Harris-Benedict tends to slightly overestimate.
Should I eat my BMR calories?
No. BMR is only the resting portion. You also burn energy on activity and digesting food, so eating only BMR would put you in a large deficit. Use TDEE, not BMR, as a maintenance target.
